Social media ad sizes by aspect ratio
Recommended pixel dimensions for the three campaign formats Reframe generates — square (1:1), vertical (9:16), and landscape (16:9) — plus where each ratio actually gets used and what typically gets cropped. Ad sizes by ratio
Square feed
| Platform | Placement | Recommended size (px) |
|---|---|---|
| Feed post | 1080 × 1080 | |
| Feed post | 1080 × 1080 | |
| X | Standalone image ad | 1200 × 1200 |
| Single image ad | 1200 × 1200 |
Cropping risk: Square placements crop the least, but feed UIs (profile row, caption, action icons) still sit close to the edges on mobile. Keep the subject and any text inside the center 90% of the frame.
Vertical story / reel / short
| Platform | Placement | Recommended size (px) |
|---|---|---|
| Story / Reel | 1080 × 1920 | |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 | |
| TikTok | In-feed video / image | 1080 × 1920 |
| YouTube | Shorts | 1080 × 1920 |
Cropping risk: Vertical placements are the riskiest for cropping: the top area is usually covered by the profile name and follow button, and the bottom 15–20% is covered by captions, music titles, and reply or share controls. Keep headlines, logos, and CTAs inside the middle 60% of the frame vertically.
Landscape banner
| Platform | Placement | Recommended size (px) |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | In-stream / standard upload | 1920 × 1080 |
| X | Landscape image ad | 1200 × 675 |
Cropping risk: Landscape banners crop the sides first when a placement is narrower than the source. Keep the product, logo, and headline centered rather than pushed to the left or right edge.
Placements that use a different native ratio
Not every placement matches 1:1, 9:16, or 16:9 exactly. These are common enough that it is worth knowing where a Reframe output will need a light crop or letterbox rather than a pixel-exact fit.
LinkedIn's horizontal ad ratio is 1.91:1, not 16:9. It is close enough that a 16:9 source usually needs only minor letterboxing or a light crop, but it is not a pixel-exact match.
Meta's current recommended feed ad ratio is 4:5, not 1:1 or 9:16. A 1:1 or 9:16 source will be cropped or letterboxed to fit unless resized separately.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does Reframe only generate 1:1, 9:16, and 16:9?
- These three ratios cover the placements most DTC and ecommerce campaigns need first: square feed, vertical story/reel/short, and landscape banner. Some platforms use ratios that are close but not identical, such as LinkedIn's 1.91:1 or Meta's 4:5 feed recommendation.
- Will a 1:1 or 16:9 image work on a platform that recommends a slightly different ratio, like 4:5 or 1.91:1?
- It can, but the platform will letterbox or crop it to fit. For placements with a meaningfully different native ratio, review the result on that placement before publishing.
- What is the biggest cropping risk for vertical (9:16) placements?
- The top and bottom of the frame. Profile names, follow buttons, captions, and reply controls typically overlay the top and bottom 15-20% of the screen, so keep text and logos centered vertically.
- How often do these dimensions change?
- Platforms update recommended sizes periodically. This page was last verified on 2026-08-04 — check the platform's current ad specs before a launch if it has been more than a few months.
